Bank Robbery Suspect Kills Himself

JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: From the CNN newsroom, late breaking news developments from Tampa, Florida -- situation there involving a bank robbery suspect of a Tampa area bank. The man is said to have killed a police officer in the course of being pursued by the police. He's been holed up for some time now in an apartment complex there. The police have just told us that the suspect has killed himself.

Again, this is a bank robbery attempt that occurred earlier in the day, about 11:00 in the morning local time. After the attempted bank robbery, a number of officers were involved in chasing down the suspect. What the police chief described as a running gun battle broke out. One officer was shot three times and died at a local hospital.

Another officer was grazed by a bullet, said to be in good condition. Third officer was not hurt in the course of the chase. Then at that point, the suspect took refuge inside an apartment complex. The Tampa area police have had him cornered in that location for some time, apparently had been trying to communicate with the suspect by telephone, had brought in a family member to talk with the suspect in hopes if getting him to give himself up. Just a few minutes ago, Tampa police telling CNN that the suspect in that case has now killed himself.
