LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to Chicago, live WBBM newscast. There's something happening here -- WGN, sorry.
UNIDENTIFIED WGN ANCHOR: Probably because he was yelling and the woman was walking in own power and everything.
UNIDENTIFIED WGN ANCHOR: What did you see this morning? Did you happen to see any of this go down earlier?
UNIDENTIFIED WGN ANCHOR: No, I didn't. I was actually working in my room with the window closed, and IO received a phone call from a friend to make sure we were OK, then I noticed what was going on.
UNIDENTIFIED WGN ANCHOR: We understand that Michigan Avenue is shutdown. A lot of people forced to stay in buildings all morning long.
Thanks, Richard, for joining us.
UNIDENTIFIED WGN ANCHOR: Thank you.
UNIDENTIFIED WGN ANCHOR: Let's check with bob at the scene. Looks like a lot of developments -- Bob.
UNIDENTIFIED WGN REPORTER: Yes, Roseanne, you just saw live the ambulance leaving the scene here. And it was escorted by two Chicago marked police cars and followed by a third and several officers on foot running after it. So they were giving the ambulance full a siren, a police escort to the hospital, apparently carrying the wounded Chicago police officer who was struck trying to serve a warrant here at 13th and Wabash on the third floor of an apartment building, and for a suspect that we have heard was possibly involved in some bank robberies. That's some more information that we have so verify. That would also give credence to the fact that the FBI was here in conjunction with the Chicago police officer, with the Chicago police, possibly a federal warrant at this time.
And we're told that another police car is about to come through, and that may contain the suspect if he is in fact unarmed at this time.
The fire department is here. They have set up a parameter around the area. The police and the s.w.a.t. teams are beginning to walk out of the door at this point. From our vantage, at about a half block away, it's pretty difficult to see. But there is a great deal of activity at this point. We will keep you posted the moment something else occurs here on the scene. Back to you.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE, WGN ANCHOR: All right, thank you, Bob. We just finished saying, no Cook County hospitals...
WATERS: That's the WGN reporter on the scene, confirming what we had heard earlier, about 30 minutes ago when we talked to WGN radio reporter Larry Schreiner. A police officer who was in the building had been wounded, and was to be brought out.
Apparently this is the sequence here with police officer being brought out of the building. This is the person who was wounded in the early minutes of the attempt to serve a warrant on an apparent bank robbery suspect who remains inside here, barricaded in his apartment and surrounded by a joint task force of Chicago police and FBI. This police officer who was wounded was loaded onto this ambulance, and we just missed it when we switched over live to Chicago. But the ambulance sped away, and as the reporter said, it had a police escort, front and back.
But the situation apparently remains the same, except for the wounded man being gotten out. We still have the man holed up in his apartment. We still have residents of this apartment building being told it would be safer for them to remain in their quarters for now.
So the hostage negotiators are still at work. We're still watching this story. We'll still bring you developments when they occur.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: We want to take you back now to the story in Chicago's south loop. A man holed up after police tried to ask him questions, or serve a warrant. As we just told you, that it seems one police officer was shot in a shooting that rang out. Several shots fired, according to neighbors nearby.
The police officer was shot, apparently just taken to the hospital, surrounded by police officers. In the past few minutes, some members of the FBI have come out of that building. Not wearing their helmets any longer. We don't know if this situation is over or not, if the man is still holed up inside of that apartment, and then as a result, people are still holed up in their apartment as well.
But we we'll continue to check in with our local affiliates to see what the story is here this afternoon in Chicago.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE, WBBM-REPORTER: Persons who went down was a Chicago police detective. Since that time, about 2 1/2 hours have past, perhaps three hours. We're now at 12:30, and just a few minutes ago the latest developments in all of this, two squad cars raced out of here in front of an ambulance. Then the ambulance came by. And we are told that two people were transported out of the scene, two injured people, out of the scene. And that two children have come out of this building. An African- American child; a boy and a girl.
ALLEN: All right. We were just trying to get a little bit more of information from WBBM, that two children have come out. We did report earlier, we saw one child brought out and put in an ambulance, but again no word on an end to this at this time. So we'll still continue to watch it.
