LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: In New York, the upper west side of Manhattan, the scene is of Martin Luther King, Jr. High School. We understand the school has just gone through the same ordeal so many other high schools across the country -- too many high schools across the country have in recent years -- another school shooting incident here.
We understand there have been two people shot here at the school. We are understand they are at the hospital right now. We understand they are two -- now we have revised information about the victims -- we understand they were two students, two 16-year-old students, they were shot in the back.
They are now being treated at the hospital -- do we know which hospital yet? Saint Vincent's Hospital? They are at Saint Vincent's Hospital, one of the area hospitals in the upper west side. These two 16-year-old students were shot in the back just moments before 2:00 p.m. Eastern time, we understand, which would have been about 45, or maybe 50 minutes ago or so -- this incidents has resulted in the school being totally shut off as you see here, surrounded by emergency vehicles.
There are police officers all over the place down there. They are searching for the shooter. We presume, we understand that they have the building closed off, and the students inside, perhaps still in their classrooms or taken to some other safe haven inside as the police there look for the shooter.
No word on if they have actually got the person now or expect to soon. We are keeping an eye on the situation. We will try to get some better information as well on the condition of the two students that were shot.
Tragically this is happening on Martin Luther King's birthday at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School. Incredible as it may seem. Once again, another one of these tragic scenes. We are keeping our eye on it. Stay tuned.
