KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A frightening shooting spree in Montgomery County, Maryland outside the nation's capital. The toll: five people killed in a 15-hour period.
CNN National Correspondent Bob Franken is in Montgomery County with the latest on the search for the suspects -- Bob.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Well, the latest, first of all, Kyra, within the last hour, we showed somebody being taken into custody. That person, we are now told, had nothing to do with this case.

It was a totally unrelated case, so forget what you saw in the last hour. We are also now witnessing two things that are going on. One, a massive man hunt, as you might understand, for one or maybe two people.

One witness said he might have seen two people in the vehicle in question. Another consideration, of course, are the schools of Montgomery County. There are 140 -- 190 of them, 140,000 students. They are in school. Officials intend to keep them in the schools until of the end of the school day. Then, they will be released to police patrols who will accompany them to make sure that they get home safely.

Obviously, the kids have been kept in the school and not outside throughout the day. That is also for the adjacent District of Columbia, the schools there, because of course, whoever is involved in this could travel very easily into Washington, D.C. Montgomery County, Maryland is actually suburban Washington.

Now, the police say that they have had five deaths, six shootings. They began last night at 5:20, and they happened at a craft store when somebody shot through a window. At that particular one, nobody was hit, but at 6:00 last night, at a shopping center, at a grocery store, somebody was coming outside of the store when he was shot and killed, a 55-year-old man.

That was followed by this morning at 7:41 when a man, who was cutting his grass not far from where we are right now was shot and killed.

At 8:10, just about a half hour later, at the gas station where we are, right in back of me, a taxi cab driver was filling up his vehicle. He was shot and killed.

At 8:37, just about a half hour after that -- or 20 minutes after that, a woman at a nearby retirement center was shot and killed, and then, at 10:00 a.m. today, the last shooting, that was one where a woman at a Shell station not far from here, also, was shot and killed as she was vacuuming out her car.

Now, the one thing that is really intriguing, according to police, is that each of the deaths involved just one shot. So, the people they're looking for, or the person they are looking for somebody who is considered a marksman. They're saying that there doesn't seem to be any sort of scheme to the shootings, but whoever is doing it seems to be doing it in a methodical way.

But the last shooting occurred this morning about 10:00.

PHILLIPS: Bob, meanwhile, tell me what police are doing. I know they are securing the schools, they want to make sure all the kids get home safely, but what about roadblocks, or the search for these suspects? Are they stopping every single white box delivery truck? What's going on?

FRANKEN: They're not. They are, in fact, allowing traffic -- you have to understand that the roads around here are extremely heavily traveled, including the ones where the shootings occurred, and it would be chaotic if they set up roadblocks, but you can bet that they're keeping a very close eye to look for the kind of vehicle which, by the way, is not only a white box vehicle, but one that reportedly has a damaged tailgate area and one that may, according to one witness, have some black lettering on it.

PHILLIPS: All right. Our Bob Franken following the breaking news out of Montgomery County, Maryland. Thanks, Bob.
