MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: To what extent, Eric, is that sort of a typical, or, if you will, an ideal, location for a sniper?
ERIC HANEY, CNN FIREARMS ANALYST: This is the third time that he's used the setting sort of like that. When the child was shot at school, the shooter was in the woodline. And that was a relatively small wooded area. Nearby was a place to park a vehicle. Looks like about the same situation here. Very similar.
Down in Ashland, there were great similarities, small wooded area, shot from a woodline. Behind that wooded area was a place one could place a vehicle and make their egress out of the area very unobtrusively.
O'BRIEN: The range on this weapon that is believed to be used in all this is some 730 yards. That's about a half mile. It provides a tremendous advantage for somebody who is trying to flee a crime. I guess that's an obvious statement. But do you think that many of these shots are performed at that great a distance?
HANEY: None of them have been shot at anything near that distance. The longest one that I've seen was at about 110 meters. This one this morning, if you look from the bus into the woodline, from what I can tell just gauging it by (UNINTELLIGIBLE) the size of that basketball court, 30 to 40 meters.
No, these are not classic sniper shots. I haven't gone into this before, but militarily, you characterize these as ambushes. An ambush is an attack from a concealed position upon a moving or a temporarily (UNINTELLIGIBLE) target. And then you leave.
