Helicopter Crash West of Baghdad

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It has been a little tough getting concrete information, but we have some for you now. A U.S. military helicopter goes down west of Baghdad. It happened, oh, about four and a half hours ago.
Let's take you live to Baghdad to see what Karl Penhaul has found out.

Hello -- Karl.

KARL PENHAUL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Carol.

Details are still a little slow in coming out, but we have a little more information for you now. Coalition military authorities here in Baghdad have told us it's one of the Apache attack helicopters that's gone down.

They say, according to their initial reports -- and they do say initial reports -- but they suggest that the two-man crew did survive that accident.

Now, so far, there's no word on why the helicopter may have come down. They haven't specified whether it was a crash or whether it may have come under fire.

It did, though, go down in the town of Habaniyah. That's about 40 miles west of Baghdad, and that's in the heart of the so-called Sunni triangle. This is where the anti-coalition resistance movement has been most strong, and you may remember that last week there was an attack on a Black Hawk Medivac helicopter. That went down in the nearby town of Fallujah, and all nine people aboard that helicopter were killed.

But as I say, so far coalition military authorities are not confirming the cause of today's accident, only to say a two-seater Apache has gone down. It appears that the crew have survived.
