PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to start with today's violence in Iraq and our Baghdad Bureau Chief Jane Arraf who has the latest details for us this evening -- Jane.
JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Paula, it was the deadliest attack since the end of the war, the highest casualty toll since then and a shock because it happened in the south.
We thought of the south as relatively peaceful. There have been no significant attacks on British soldiers but this one resulted in six dead. British military police were attacked at a police station about 100 miles north of the port city of Basra.
Now, they were training Iraqi police when they were attacked, six of them dead, and at roughly the same time in almost the same area another attack with rocket-propelled grenades, heavy machine gun fire and rifle fire on a British patrol, these people from a parachute division.
They called in reinforcements. That resulted in eight British soldiers wounded. What appears to be some coordination behind that in roughly the same area and the same time and a reminder, if we needed it, that Iraq, even the south, is still a turbulent place -- Paula.
ZAHN: Jane Arraf, appreciate the update.
