Anderson Cooper's Final Thought

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Well, finally tonight, the truth about Bambi. Last week, we brought you the story of a Las Vegas company that claimed customers could pay to hunt naked women and shoot them with paintball guns. Now, we only decided to do the story when the mayor of Las Vegas came on our program to announce he was launching an investigation. The owner of the company also came on to discuss the whole creepy concept with another guest.
Well, the mayor has investigated, and today he said he thinks the whole hunt was a scam, designed to sell videos. Take a look.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Some of the media were used as unwitting dupes to promote a private enterprise, it would appear from all sorts of admissions made to me and to Mr. Rudman (ph) of the city attorney office and to other folks associate with the city that the purported hunt for Bambi was a scam.

COOPER: Well, the city has issued a legal citation against the company, but in the meantime, of course, they've gotten lots of publicity and no doubt many hits on their Web sites because of this very video, right here.
Now, as scams go, it was a pretty good one. Cable news catnipped, really. There was that video, of course, bizarre, unbelievable, and yet in an age without shame, not all that unbelievable.
It's a painful thing to think we brought you a story that turned out not to be true. I should have remembered what my mom said to me when I was but a wee lad -- "Son," she said, "Always buy low and sell high, and never ever trust a guy from Vegas who makes a living selling tapes of naked women." Should have listened.
