ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Well, a preliminary autopsy report indicates that Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy died of gunshot wounds to the head. Now, Dennehy's former teammate, Carlton Dotson, is accused of murder.
Ed Lavandera standing by with more on the investigation from Waco, Texas.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ED LAVANDERA, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): About six weeks after Patrick Dennehy disappeared his body was found in this Waco field, just four miles away from his Waco apartment. Authorities believe this is where Carlton Dotson shot and killed Dennehy.
The preliminary autopsy report says Dennehy suffered gunshot wounds to the head. Officials say it will take some time, however, to complete a full autopsy because of the physical condition Dennehy's body was found in.
BELINDA SUMMERS, MCLENNAN COUNTY JUSTICE OF THE PEACE: As far as me physically looking at the body, because it was so badly decomposed, but as far as information back from Dallas, that's all. That's all the preliminary states is the name, the manner and cause of death, and the place that it took place.
LAVANDERA: Sources tell CNN Dennehy was shot two or three times in the head and that a 0.9 millimeter handgun and shell casings were found at the crime scene. But investigators don't believe that gun was used to shoot Dennehy.
If you remember, a search warrant affidavit says an unidentified informant told investigators that Carlton Dotson disposed of another 0.9 millimeter handgun somewhere between Waco and Virginia.

LAVANDERA: Funeral services are being prepared for Patrick Dennehy. Family members say that it will take place on August 11 in San Jose, California. That's where Dennehy grew up.
Also, Baylor University is preparing a memorial service of its own, but that won't take place until students return here to the Baylor campus when the fall semester starts in several weeks -- Anderson.
