ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Finally tonight the politics of pie. As he endorsed fellow Green Party member Peter Comejo, for a California governor yesterday, Ralph Nader there was struck in the face with a pie. Nader quickly returned fire as you saw but the attacker faded into the underbrush. Fortunately the pie appears to have been a does and only grazed Nader. But the reality is this could have been bad, I am talking mince meat bad. Pie throwing has a long history as one of the martial arts. It's unclear exactly whether Soupy Sales started it all, his television program glorified pie violence to generations of impressionable youngsters.
Since then it seems any clown will throw pies. Over the years victims include San Francisco Mayor Willy Brown, Agricultural Secretary Dan Glickman and even civilian casualties like Bill Gates. Well, missed Bill Gates, there. But if my paraphrase, Susan Powder (ph), stop the pie related insanity. Ever since the industrial revolution mass production has allowed pie maker to churn out these doughy missiles nonstop with no concern for the toll they take on society. In some neighborhoods school kids are able to get their hands on the Saturday cartoon specials, Hostess fruit pies. Call me old fashioned but there's only one kind of pie that belongs in America's schools, and it starts for 3.1 for 1.59.
