ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: The odyssey of Carlton Dotson from Baylor basketball player to jail inmate took another step today.
A grand jury in Waco, Texas, indicted Dotson on murder charges in the killing of his former teammate, Patrick Dennehy.
Details now from CNN's Ed Lavandera.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ED LAVANDERA, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Carlton Dotson was arrested on July 21. Since that time he's been sitting in a Maryland jail, fighting extradition back to Texas.
Waco prosecutors are hopeful that a grand jury's murder indictment will speed up Dotson's return to face the murder charge against him. It's not clear, though, how much longer the extradition process will take.
JOHN SEGREST, MCCLENNAN COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY: I would not anticipate any problems but it's -- saying it's a done deal would be an incorrect statement.
LAVANDERA: The indictment says Dotson shot and killed Baylor basketball teammate Patrick Dennehy on June 12. Dennehy's body was found six weeks later.
An autopsy report says Dennehy was shot twice in the head.
Dotson's indictment is the latest development in a story that has weighed heavily on the minds of Baylor students and faculty this summer. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday on campus, and to help lift spirits super star comedian Bill Cosby has offered to speak at a university rally on September 4. Cosby announced his plans by phone.
BILL COSBY, COMEDIAN: I'm not saying that they're down, down, down, but they just have to recognize that they are loved and they have a job to do and this is going to be a rally.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
LAVANDERA: Cosby will speak at the 50,000-seat football stadium in Waco, and everyone is being invited to attend.
COOPER: Ed, what's it going to take to get Carlton Dotson back to Texas?
LAVANDERA: Well, what happens now is that the judge has to schedule another extradition hearing. There was a hearing last week, it was postponed, so essentially under Maryland law they can only hold Dotson there in Maryland for another 60 days.
But under Maryland law, as well, they needed this grand jury indictment to extradite Dotson to do everything on the up and up. So the prosecutors in Waco following all the paperwork and all the requests that need to be done to make that happen, and it will likely happen in the next two months.
COOPER: All right. Dotting all the "i"s. Ed in Dallas, thanks very much.
