Focus on Fashion Gives Going Back to School a New Meaning

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: When it comes to affluent kids back to school means more than pencils and notebooks, they're hitting salons and trendy stores.
CNN's Jeanne Moos, has that story.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): On the first day of school what kids tend to study is each other.
(on camera): Is this a new bag?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, it is.
MOOS: This is from Coach.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My outfit's new.
MOOS: The whole thing.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Everybody's calling each other up like the night before like what are you wearing?
MOOS (voice-over): Need something from the Americana Mall. For instance what's bills as a back to school hat with the Chanel logo.
(on camera): Kid get this for 290 bucks?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes. Yes.
MOOS (voice-over): It's what's under the hat that counts in the New Best Salon in well to do Manhasset, Long Island.
(on camera): How many back to school heads have you done this past week?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hundreds.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Everyone here except for that one got their nails done yesterday.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.
MOOS: Why didn't you get your nails done?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I was busy doing summer reading.
MOOS (voice-over): Some kids face the new school year with a new face.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Back to school surgeries, 12 noses, three ear pinnings, two male breast reductions, three female breast reductions.
MOOS: This doctor Luckas (ph) specializes in adolescent plastic surgery and fixed his then 16-year-old daughter's nose.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All I did was take off the bump.
MOOS: The face is usually done growing by 15 or 16. The doctor says surgery is for kids with serious self-esteem problems. One girl who had a nose job made a before sketch. Ha ha big nose. And an after. You look great. Great is what stores say about the back to college business.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's almost bigger than Christmas for us.
MOOS: Stores like linens and things, Wal-Mart and JC Penny have started back to school gift registries modeled after wedding registries. From a dorm lamp with six heads to the well groomed head these days back to school preps can start as far back as nursery school.
