DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go to Washington D.C. This is Democratic minority leader Nancy Pelosi talking about the recall election in her home state of California.
(JOINED IN PROGRESS)
REP. NANCY PELOSI (D), CALIFORNIA: I want to commend Governor Gray Davis for his leadership on investing in education for the children of California, protecting the environment, struggling with the economic woes, which as you know, are national in scope, protecting a woman's right to choose. So many issues of that -- that the public generally supports.
We've had a bad economy in this country and a bad economy in California, and that was, I think, what last night was about. It was about jobs, and it was about the economy.
One of the lead arguments that was used against Gray Davis in the memos that were circulated by the Republicans was he inherited record surpluses and he turned them into record deficits.
President George Bush should take heed of that message. President Clinton's administration produced 22 million new jobs. President Bush has lost 3.2 million jobs in the -- fewer than three years that he's been president. Many -- some of those jobs were lost in California, and that's why we've had the economic stress that we have there.
But this economic problem is a national economic problem. I think the message from California is a message to President Bush, stop the reckless economic policies that are resulting in record joblessness in this country and record deficits for the American people, that make it very difficult to grow the economy and create jobs in our states.
Any questions?
QUESTION: Will the Democrats here support Schwarzenegger's effort to turn the economy around, or will you take more of an approach of, you're in charge, do what you will, we'll be here on the sidelines?
PELOSI: We will always fight for California, for economic growth, for investing in education, for protecting the environment. And where we have our common ground with the governor, we will certainly support his efforts, the governor to-be, governor-elect, and where we do not, we will respectfully disagree, but we wish him... KAGAN: We've been listening to Democratic minority leader Nancy Pelosi. She couldn't quite say Arnold Schwarzenegger's name there, calling it a sad night for her state. She represents the area that surrounds the city of San Francisco. Of course she's referring to the recall election that sees the ouster of Governor Gray Davis, the Democrat, and Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger will sometime next month take office.
