KELLY WALLACE, CNN ANCHOR: Right now, we want to go to that news conference getting under way in Columbus, Ohio. Let's listen in.
CHIEF DEPUTY STEVE MARTIN, FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO: At approximately 10:00 a.m., Law enforcement has now included one additional report. This now brings the total, including Mrs. Niesley's case to 11. Only two cases have been positively linked through ballistics, several others are similar in characteristics. The remaining shooting incidents have no ballistic evidence to support their relationship, however, they remain of interest for me -- interest to law enforcement because of the similarity in the geographical location.
Investigators are pleased with the quality of leads that are being phoned into our tip line. Many of the leads are reports of suspicious persons that were observed at various times in the area of the shootings since May the 10th. Other leads mention possible suspects by name. Investigators treat each lead as though it may hold the key to resolving these cases. Suspects are investigated immediately to determine their possible involvements. Steps are taken to quickly rule them in as persons of interest or eliminate them as suspects so as not to expend unnecessary time or resources.
The public continues to be the key to solving these cases. Yesterday we released information concerning behavioral changes that law enforcement typically sees in a suspect that causes the death of another person. It is hoped by providing a list of these behavioral changes that the public will contact the sheriff's office immediately if they know of someone exhibiting these characteristics.
And some of those characteristics that I mentioned yesterday were: a change in normal routine, missing work or other scheduled events, leaving the area quickly without notice, intense interest in the investigation, displays of anxiety or extreme irritability, changes in the consumption of alcohol or drugs, change in sleeping habits, change in physical appearances.
As stated yesterday, the persons exhibiting one or more of these behavioral changes alone is not necessarily an indication of someone's involvement in the crime. However, if a citizen is aware of additional information that lends credibility to someone they know may have involved, they should immediately contact our tip line at area code (614) 462-4646.
To the person or persons responsible for these incidents, law enforcement would like very much to open a dialogue with you. We are asking you to contact the sheriff's office at area code (614) 462- 4646. So we can begin talking to you immediately.
Investigators continue to appreciate the role of the media in getting appropriate, timely and responsible information to the public. Thank you for your assistance. Our next press conference is scheduled for Sunday, November the 30th, at 4:00 p.m. in this room. If there's any changes, we'll contact you to let you know. I'll take some questions, please.
WALLACE: You have been listening to Chief Deputy Steve Martin of Franklin County, Ohio, talking about a string of shootings, more than ten shootings, in a stretch of I-270 south of Columbus. He said only two so far have been linked. One of those shootings fatal, 62-year- old Gale Neisley. She was in the passenger seat of a friend's car when a bullet ripped through the door and killed her.
He is now calling on the community in Ohio and around the country, of course, to call in with any tips to solve this crime.
