'Amber' Ordeal

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Live pictures now giving you an update on the abduction case we told you so much about yesterday. Jerry William Jones having allegedly shot four and then abducting three girls and a self-inflicted wound to himself after a chase. Let's listen to authorities.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... day-to-day jobs. On behalf of Sheriff Davis, all of his daily activities have had to be put on the back burner for the last few days. And he's behind in all of the work that's going on in our county. He's behind on things that have to be done with the drug test reports and trying to maintain coverage of the drug activity in our area.

And in addition to that, he's very tired. He's continuing with daily activities as we speak, and there are many pressing issues that demand his attention right now because of his being tied up for the last several days. On behalf of both of them, we'd like to say thank you for your coverage. This will be the final statement from the sheriff's office.

JOHN BANKHEAD, GBI: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) sum up one other issue as far as the situation goes with the investigation. GBI too appreciates you're alls cooperation with this effort. Yesterday's there was a lot of pressure on everybody, you all and us both, with respect to what was going on and to find the individual and rescue the children, that was done. And we appreciate you all's help with that.

Now the investigation has changed into a homicide or murder case. He has been charged with murder. So the situation as far as press briefings is going to change significantly due to that particular situation.

I will say, and we've said earlier but I will repeat that the vehicle last night was taken to the GBI crime lab in Atlanta to process for evidence. Also, the weapon was seized that was inside the vehicle to compare with the casings and other evidence that was found at the scene to see if it might be the same weapon. That is in connection with the on going murder investigation.

Again, there are interviews being conducted. This is not going to stop. Just the press briefings will stop. Agents and investigators with the country are continuing the interviews with citizens, with respect to the activities of Mr. Jones.

At an appropriate time, we will interview the children in the presence of specialists that deal with juveniles. And also the mother of those children is still being interviewed to see if we can gain any information from her what he might have discussed during the telephone conversations that were had.

So this pretty much ends it as far as any press briefings go and we thank you all for being here and wish you all the best. Thank you again.

QUESTION: Can you tell us how the mother is doing?

BANKHEAD: She's doing fine. She's obviously under pressure having lost her mother, sister and child. She was happy to see her kids this morning when they were brought in by DFACS.

The custody situation is in the hands of the Department of Family and Children's Services, a state agency in the county. So we had no knowledge on that process. The Department of Human Resources in Georgia would be the contact on that end. I understand there might be a hearing on that, but I have no direct knowledge as far as that will end of it goes.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

BANKHEAD: Pardon?

QUESTION: Tell us your name.

BANKHEAD: My name is John Bankhead. I'm sorry. I'm the director of public affairs with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

BANKHEAD: It happened upstairs in the building across the street in that room in that corner. The kids were brought in. I saw one encounter with the child. She was very happy to see her mother, very excited, bouncing up and down. I did not see the reaction of the mother. She was blocked. But they were in a room by themselves for a period of time.

QUESTION: Officer, what about the autopsies? Has the cause of death been determined?

BANKHEAD: The autopsies have been completed. Two were done yesterday and two were done today. We're not going to release that information quite yet because of the interviews that need to be done with the suspect.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

BANKHEAD: That has to be addressed through DFACS. That's the issue for them that they have to address with respect to the issues they have to face with those kids.

QUESTION: When you say DFACS (OFF-MIKE)

BANKHEAD: No. I might have but I was misspoken. It's the Department of Family and Children Services. The headquarters -- they have Gordon County office. It's a state agency that's based in Atlanta. O'BRIEN: We've been listening to John Bankhead. His the public affairs officer for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation providing just a few more details.

I didn't hear too much additional information. Nevertheless, buttoning up that story which we told you about yesterday which began with a quadruple slaying, ended with a high speed chase, ultimately leading to self-inflicted gunshot wounds on the alleged murderer. And a person who had kidnapped, allegedly, three young girls.

James William Jones apparently will survive those gunshot wounds. And we will continue to track this story as developments warrant.
