John Kerry Addresses Supporters in New Hampshire

I've never seen more crazy people early in the morning. I don't know. Thank you. Thank you for a wonderful warm welcome on a cold morning in New Hampshire. And thank you for welcoming back to New Hampshire, comeback Kerry. I appreciate that.

(APPLAUSE)

I'm -- last Sunday the New England Patriots won, and one week from today, American patriots here in New Hampshire have an opportunity to restore fairness to America and to put the American people back in charge, and that's what we're going to do. The whole world will be watching what you do here, as they were watching in Iowa. It's your chance now. You're next in this great journey that is part of American history and part of our future at the same time.

We, here in New Hampshire, have a chance to be able next Tuesday to give America back its future and its soul at the same time, and I count on you to do that.

(APPLAUSE)

I -- as I come back to New Hampshire, I want to begin by thanking you, because over the last months, all of you in this state have helped to make me a better candidate.

And I'm also here to tell you this morning that as a result of that, while I may be the underdog in this state, I have yet begun to fight and show the full measure of what we will do in this state. I ask you -- I ask you, all of you here, I know your commitment, but I ask those who haven't joined this effort yet to join. When you push away the words, you push away the pundits, push away the polls, this race is about the people of our country. It's about who we are as a nation and where we want to go. It's about our legacy as adults to our children. It's about our responsibility to leave this country of ours that we love so dearly in better shape to our children than we were given it by our parents. And I am determined that we will live up to that responsibility.

I ask you -- I ask you to join me in fighting for people like Lisa (ph) and Randy Denuccio (ph) of Salem. I visit their home. They live beside a lake. The lake is now polluted by an additive gasoline called MTBE. The water they used to use to mix lemonade, their kids can't anymore. The water they used to take showers in, they don't anymore. They are scared.

And now, George Bush is trying to make it possible for the companies that do that to people to avoid their responsibility altogether. Big oil is trying to stick New Hampshire with the bill when one-sixth of New Hampshire's lakes have been polluted.

I am running because I, like many Americans, don't think it's right that George Bush places his buddies as the first priority of America. I am running for president to put New Hampshire and its citizens first, and that's what we need to do.

(APPLAUSE)

I want you -- for John (ph) and Mary Anne Knowles (ph) of Hudson, life is very real -- more real than the bubble of Washington and the bubble of the White House. John (ph) lost his job in the Bush recession, and Mary Ann (ph) has cancer. She has to keep her job in order to have the health insurance and has to keep working while she has chemotherapy. That's tough. And I don't think it ought to be that way in our country. I think people ought to be able to have the right to health care without having to worry about the pains and injury they to have suffer even while trying to get it.

And so, I am running to guarantee that we stop being the only industrial nation on the face of this planet, and the richest one at that, not to understand that health care is not a privilege for the powerful and the wealthy. Health care is a right for all Americans, and we're going to make it available to all Americans.

O'BRIEN: That's Senator John Kerry addressing his supporters at a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, fresh off his win in Iowa last night. Obviously sounding a little tired, but feeling, I am certain, very, very good.

HEMMER: As they say in politics, we've got a good, old good one going on right now.

You know, Howard Dean has been traditionally very strong in the state of New Hampshire. W What does this surge do for John Kerry now, the impact on Howard Dean? And Wesley Clark has been up there pounding on doors, said to be drawing very impressive crowds.

We'll see if that translates into impressive votes.
