POPE FRANCIS I, LEADER OF CATHOLIC CHURCH (through translator): Dear brothers and sisters, good evening.
(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)
POPE FRANCIS I (through translator): As you know, the duty of the conclave was to appoint a bishop of Rome. And it seems to me that my brothers, cardinals, have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am.
(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)
POPE FRANCIS I (through translator): I would like to thank you for your embrace. Also to the Roman Catholic Church and the bishops, thank you very much.
And first and foremost, first and foremost, I would like to pray our emeritus bishop, Benedict XVI.
(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)
POPE FRANCIS I (through translator): Let us pray, all of us together, for him so that he is blessed by the lord and guarded by the Madonna.
Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
In the name of the father, the son and the Holy Spirit.
As (INAUDIBLE) shall remain for centuries and centuries. Let us begin this journey together, the successor and the people. And this journey for the Roman Catholic Church, it is a journey of friendship, of love, of trust, and faith between us. Let us pray always for one another. Let us pray for the whole world, because let us have a big brotherhood. I wish that this journey for the church that we are going to start today, and my vicar cardinal is going to help me -- let's hope that this journey bears fruit for the evangelizing from this beautiful city.
(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)
POPE FRANCIS I (through translator): I would like to offer you my blessing, but I would like to ask a favor first, first that -- before the bishop, bless the people.
I would like to pray for the lord, so that the prayer of the people blesses also the new pontiff.
Let us pray in silence your prayer to me.
(APPLAUSE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): The Holy Father Francis gives his blessing to all of you present here and those who are listening to the radio or watching him live on TV or through any media.
He offers you his blessing. Let us pray, almighty God, so that long live the pontiff (INAUDIBLE) of the church and leader us and grants peace to the church and the whole world.
POPE FRANCIS I (through translator): Now my blessing to you and to the whole world, to all the men and women goodwill. And may the blessing of all almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit descend on you, and remain with you always. Amen.
